12 August 2020 – Today is International Youth Day, which commemorates the voices, actions and initiatives of young people across the globe. It’s the perfect time for us to tell you all about new committee we’ve set up made up entirely of young Australians.
At Raise, we passionately believe in the importance of giving a voice to young people at all times. As part of our commitment to being a Youth Safe, Youth Friendly organisation, Raise has pledged to provide welcoming, safe and nurturing services and ensure young people are always heard, valued and supported through our mentoring programs.
To ensure young people always come first we recently appointed nine inspiring young people to our inaugural Youth Advisory Council (YAC). The council is made up of young Australians aged 18-25 years old who are passionate about the wellbeing of young people, are eager to share their ideas and experiences as a young person and are aspiring agents of change in the youth sector.
The purpose of the YAC is to represent the voice of young people in our community and we’re committed to collaborating with them to improve our organisation. Their voices will guide us in the challenges we’re facing and the new ideas we’re developing to ensure we have the young person’s best interest at the heart of everything we do.
The YAC will work on projects across the whole organisation as well as develop their own youth-led projects and initiatives. Initially, the YAC was going to be based in Sydney, with in-person meetings held monthly at our Raise offices, but an unexpected positive of the COVID-19 crisis lead to us moving meetings online, meaning we’re now able to recruit nationally. Therefore, we’ve appointed members from almost all states where Raise is currently running mentoring programs.
Already all YAC members have completed the Raise Foundation Course in Youth Mentoring and have held a Q&A session with the Raise Leadership Team where learned about Raise Foundation’s strategic goals, future planning and priorities within each team. This month, they’ll begin working on projects in their chosen areas of interest and we can’t wait to see what they come up with.
On this year’s International Youth Day, we are extremely excited to share this news with our Raise village. We look forward to bringing you more about youth engagement at Raise in the coming months. Watch this space!
