The program is fully supervised by a qualified Raise Program Counsellor, who is the single point of contact for the program duration. Mentors are screened for both youth safety and suitability and must complete a police check and comply with legislated Working With Children Check requirements.  In addition to compliance with the school rules, all our mentors and all our staff are bound by the Raise Code of Conduct. We operate to a comprehensive and detailed Youth Safety Framework.

 

Our mentoring model

We run the one hour program on the same day and time each week throughout school term time. A qualified Program Counsellor will be your single point of contact and responsible for supervising the volunteer mentors who work one-to-one with students. Up to 15 students can be invited to participate in the mentoring program.

 

Program pathway, what to expect once you sign up

  • Pre program

    • Meet your Raise Program Manager (PM) to discuss the mentor recruitment plan
    • Welcome meeting with your Program Counsellor (PC) and PM
    • PC hosts a student information session
    • Select mentees together with your PC and obtain parent/carer consent

  • Program delivery

    • Mentee and mentor orientations conducted by PC (weeks 1 & 2)
    • Jitters – program launches (week 3)
    • Program runs weekly throughout term time
    • Graduation (2nd last week)
    • The gift of goodbye – program concludes (last week of program)

  • Post program

    • Post-program evaluation
    • Program review using Parent/Carer and school surveys
    • Wrap up meeting and planning for following year
    • Sign School Partnership Agreement Form for following year


Who are the mentors
and where do they come from?

As part of our mentor recruitment process, we ask volunteers to nominate three schools in order of preference of where they’d like to mentor. Typically, volunteers select a school within their local or nearby communities. We discourage people from selecting schools where they might be connected to students or parents in the cohort. We allocate the places and bring the mentor groups together ahead of mentee and mentor orientation.

Similar to mentees, mentors come from a range of backgrounds and bring varied experiences and expertise to the role. However, all mentors are screened for suitability and must comply with our Code of Conduct including provision of Working With Children and National Police checks.

Our mentors change two lives – their mentee’s and their own. Aside from the sense of community and giving back, the experience delivers new insights, knowledge and skills that transfer to their own personal and work lives.
